The route leaves Castro Marim, whose castle faces Ayamonte, and heads north following the Guadiana on the EN 122 and local roads. It passes through Azinhal and Odeleite and ends in Alcoutim, a white village on the riverbank opposite Sanlúcar de Guadiana.

This is the inland Algarve, very different from the coast: gentle hills covered in rockrose, stream valleys and small villages, with the river and the Spanish bank appearing now and then. It crosses the municipalities of Castro Marim and Alcoutim.

It is about 41 km and just over an hour without stops, with more than 100 gentle bends. Altitude ranges from almost river level to about 220 m. It is a quiet ride with little traffic, made for enjoying the scenery.

Before you go

  • Alcoutim is a good place to stop by the river before heading back.
  • Some local roads are narrow: ease off on blind bends.
  • FRIEBIKER's speed-camera warnings only cover Spain (DGT data): there are none in Portugal, so watch the signs.
  • You are in Portugal and its traffic rules apply. Inside the EU you need nothing special, but carry your own and the bike's documents.
