The route runs along the Costa Tropical from west to east on the N-340 and N-340a, the old coast road. It sets off from Almuñécar, passes Salobreña and continues through Castell de Ferro to La Rábita, close to the border with Almería. It is a ride for enjoying the coastline at an easy pace, away from the motorway, with the sea as a constant companion.
The whole ride stays within the Costa Granadina area and crosses the municipalities of Almuñécar, Salobreña, Motril, Torrenueva Costa, Gualchos, Rubite, Sorvilán and Albuñol. The scenery alternates between white towns by the sea, such as Salobreña on its rock, stretches where the road clings to the cliffs between coves, and flatter farmland. There are bends, but the feel is more of a coastal cruise than a mountain road.
It is about 60 km and a little over an hour without stops, practically at sea level: the highest point is only just over 140 m. Expect town crossings, roundabouts and beach turn-offs, and more traffic and heat in summer. On the cliff sections, watch for gravel or sand on the road surface.
