The A-395 leaves Granada and climbs almost without a break to Pradollano, the base of the Sierra Nevada ski resort. It is a mountain road with a fairly wide layout, built to serve the resort, and it turns the city into the starting point for one of the biggest climbs you can ride in the area. It is usually ridden up and back on the same road.

The ride starts in the Vega de Granada and passes through the municipalities of Granada, Cenes de la Vega, Pinos Genil, Güéjar Sierra and Monachil. As you gain height the city drops away and the landscape changes from farmed hills to scrubland and, higher up, high mountain. Sierra Nevada holds the highest peaks of mainland Spain, and on clear days the views over the Vega are wide.

It is about 33 km and roughly an hour without stops. You go from around 680 m to about 2,160 m, so the temperature can drop sharply between start and finish and the weather changes quickly: take a warm layer. In the ski season there is more traffic heading to the resort, and in winter there may be snow or ice on the road. Keep an eye out for cyclists too, who are common on this climb.

Best time

Late spring to early autumn. In winter, at over 2,000 m, snow and ice are common, so check road conditions before heading up.

Before you go

  • Take a warm layer and gloves: it is much colder at the top than in Granada.
  • Give cyclists plenty of room on the climb.
  • Avoid ski-season weekends if you want a quiet road.
