The route leaves Beniaján, in the huerta of Murcia, climbs to the Puerto del Garruchal and drops down through Los Martínez del Puerto to Corvera, already in the Campo de Cartagena. It crosses the Carrascoy-El Puerto hills, which separate the huerta from the farmland to the south, and it is so close to the city that it can be ridden in an afternoon or as a short warm-up before a longer ride.
The whole ride stays within the municipality of Murcia, in its metropolitan area, yet within a few kilometres the scenery changes completely: you leave behind the outlying villages and orchards of the vega, the road heads into dry hills of pine and scrub and, on the far side, the plain of the Campo de Cartagena opens up. The climb is narrow and winding, with short bends that need your attention.
It is about 31 km and just over an hour without stops. Altitude ranges from around 50 m to about 300 m, and some 45 bends are counted along the way, with no hairpins. Being right next to the city, the road is very popular with cyclists, especially on weekend mornings, and it is narrow over the pass. There may be gravel on the bends, and in summer the heat is strong from early on.
