The route leaves Vilafranca and crosses the high plateau on the CV-15 and CV-12, with a link on the CV-1260, passing Ares del Maestrat. The last stretch enters Morella on the N-232. It is a one-way ride on open inland roads that combines well with other Maestrat routes or with the climb to Penyagolosa.
The ride crosses from l'Alt Maestrat into Els Ports through the municipalities of Vilafranca, Ares del Maestrat, Castellfort and Morella. The landscape is one of high tablelands and plateaus, with pasture, dry-stone walls and isolated farmhouses. Ares sits perched on its crag, and at the end of the ride Morella, with its castle and walls, can be seen from a long way off. It is more a scenic route than a twisty one: the layout is open and the pace relaxed.
It is about 45 km and roughly an hour without stops, with around 70 bends. The whole ride sits between about 820 m and about 1,200 m, so expect mountain weather: wind, fog and low temperatures are common. There may be livestock on the road. The N-232 carries more traffic, including lorries, and in winter ice and snow are common across the area.
